Widespread storms are affecting South East Queensland and North East New South Wales this afternoon(Thursday 6/11/2014). Storms are being produced by a trough of low pressure which is creating instability. A major storm developed this afternoon near Kyogle and produced a large display of mammatus over the Gold Coast.

The term Mammatus refers to small pockets of cloud hanging beneath the anvil of a strong thunderstorm. The word is based on the Latin term meaning breast. Mammatus formations is usually regarded as evidence of a strong updraft within the thunderstorm which can result in severe weather.

Today’s storms weakened as they reached the coast, but still managed to produce some amazing lightning displays.

My photos from around Logan Reserve, Berrinbah and Brisbane Airport last night.
