Massive Hailstones Pound Brisbane

The Bureau of Meteorology are saying this is one of the strongest storms to hit the Brisbane CBD in up to 30 years! Certainly it’s the most damaging in the CBD in 10 years.

A severe thunderstorm has passed through the Brisbane metropolitan area dropping hail up to 7cm in size across a wide area. Strong winds also accompanied the storm. Sustained winds at Archerfield airport topped 100km/h and gusted up to 141km/h. Dozens of aircraft were flipped over and buildings were damaged. Even a semi-trailer was toppled.

Energex says that 80,000 without power, 266 power lines down, over 4200 lightning strikes. Thousands of houses have broken windows and roof tiles, skylights smashed and trees down.

The storms formed on the border ranges near Kyogle and Springbrook, triggered by a southerly change surging up the coast. This powered the storms as the intensified moving up through the Gold Coast Hinterland and Beaudesert areas. The storm accelerated suddenly at it approached Brisbane, arriving about 10 minutes earlier than the original warning prediction of 4:50pm/

The storm arrived in the CBD with a sudden surge of winds driving swirling rain amongst the buildings. As I was Standing at Central Station there was a lull for a bit with just drizzle. Then came the occasional large hailstone. It was literally just one 5-7cm hail stone every 10-15 seconds for a few minutes. Then all hell broke loose as dozens of massive hailstones started crashing down.

The winds were cyclonic at times driving rain and hail sideways. Dozens of shops and arcades in the city had large amounts of water, hail and debris blown through their doors!

The flash flooding was similar to Wednesday last week, so much so that when I first showed people pictures from Fortitude Valley train station they were telling me it was last weeks! But the weather was doing a repeat.

The radar frame below shows the intensity of the storm cell as it arrive in the Brisbane CBD. The black and dark red areas indicate the most intense rainfall and hail.

Here’s my video of the hail starting to fall at Brisbane Central Station. The hailstones falling are very large, up to 5-7cm in size. They were what’s known as conglomerates, where multiple smaller hailstones combine and glue together into a larger hailstone.
