The BOM has confirmed that the severe weather event in the Perth suburbs of Beaconsfield and O’Connor was a tornado. Storm chasers had initially identified it as likely to be a tornado but this has now been confirmed. The winds in the tornado reached up to 125km/h and it was about 60m in diameter. It demolished several homes, damaged many more and left 14000 without power.
It may come as a surprise to some who don’t believe Australia gets tornadoes, but Western Australia actually gets them quite regularly in cold front storms. Tornados do also occur in QLD, with a number reported each season in the South-East alone.
